Patient Education and Special Nursing Considerations
Talk to your doctor about allergies, as uric acid inhibitors can cause allergic reactions and/or other problems (allopurinol (Rx)).
Talk to your doctor about your medical history specially if you have or had liver disease, kidney disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, and unusual diets such as fasting (allopurinol (Rx)).
DO NOT drive, use heavy machinery, or do any activity that requires you to be alert until you are absolutely positive that you can do these activities safely (allopurinol (Rx)).
Limit your alcohol consumption, as the alcohol may decrease the effectiveness of these drugs (allopurinol (Rx)).
As we get older our kidney function slows down. Since this medication is filtered out through the kidneys, older patients may have a higher risk for side effects (allopurinol (Rx)).
During pregnancy, this medication should be used only when clearly needed. This medication is a pregnancy category C (allopurinol (Rx)).
DO NOT take didanosine. This drug may cause serious interactions to occur. Please notify the doctor if you are currently taking didanosine (allopurinol (Rx)).
DO NOT start/stop/change the dosage of any medication you may be taking due to drug interactions. Please consult your physician first (allopurinol (Rx)).
Before using these medications, tell your doctor about all prescription(s), nonprescription(s), and herbal products you may be using. Mainly certain asthma drugs (i.e. aminophylline), blood thinners (i.e. warfarin (Coumadin), water pills or thiazide diuretics (i.e. hydrochlorothiazide) (allopurinol (Rx)).
